Images produced by the electron microscope can be magnified 1-50 million times greater than our normal vision. Mysterious, startling and beautiful, they stimulate our curiosity and will increase our appreciation for this wondrous world.
Invented in 1931 by German Physicists Ernst Ruska and Max Knoll, the microscope operates in a vacuum by using a high-voltage electron source such as tungsten filaments to generate a beam that is focused by electromagnetic lenses on to the specific sample. The electrons having a much shorter wavelength than visible light, allowing for significant higher resolution. This high resolution reveals the structure of the sample at the atomic/nanometer scale.
When I encountered many of these photographs, I fell in love with the abstract unknown qualities of nature.
