Old Flo, a female chimpanzee , was instinctively a very good mother. She produced offspring till the very end of her long life. My Mother shared those instincts and wonderful mothering qualities with Old Flo.

Grandmother was traditional. She wore her sorrows and her pains behind a mask of dignity. Yet, if you looked into her eyes, you saw the deep loneliness of an orphaned child. Although her family was wealthy and she married well, she did not know how to find her own power. Her husband claimed the privilege of traditional Chinese males - that of having other women. All she could do was complain to her children. By society’s standards, she had a good life, living into her mid-nineties, being well cared for by her daughters. Yet, what I most remember, beside her kindness, was the sadness in her eyes.

There is a small window of time when a girl child begins to awaken to her possibilities as a woman. The transition is a magical period, not unlike when the snows begin to melt as Spring approaches. The leaves begin to return and the willow is light and feathery. The girl child senses her innate power, but is unsure as to how to express it. There is no holding back. It must burst forward.
